South Florida Modern Quilt Guild

South Florida Modern Quilt Guild was established on an informal basis in 2011 by a small group of quilters who met regularly in a local quilt shop in Boca Raton. In 2015, SFMQG formalized as a non-profit, enabling us to grow by offering educational workshops and lectures, and giving us new ways to nurture and develop modern quilting in our communities.

We are an active guild with members from Stuart to Miami, covering Martin, West Palm, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.  We are a chapter of the national Modern Quilt Guild and our members receive all the benefits of that organization as well as our own local benefits.

Our interest is in modern quilting, which can include many approaches—reinterpreting traditional ideas with modern fabrics, using modern design aesthetics like negative space and alternate grillwork, improvisational work, and embracing simplicity and minimalism. Modern quilting, like all art, changes, grows and adapts from quilter to quilter as they find their own voices.

SFMQG holds regular workshops at different locations including Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, featuring local and national instructors and covering topics such as improvisational piecing, free-motion quilting, block printing of fabric, large scale piecing, hand embroidery, and modern quilt design. We participate in many local and national quilt shows. Quilters of all skill levels and interests are welcome to participate in meetings, workshop, sew days, show-and-tell sessions, swaps, bees and other fun events!
